Yancoal Australia's subsidiary Gloucester Coal has secured approval from the New South Wales state government to proceed with the $1.8 billion Stratford Pumped Hydro and Solar Project. The project, located 100 kilometers northwest of Newcastle, will feature a 300 MW pumped hydro power energy storage system and a 320 MW solar farm. The project is expected to deliver around 13% of the NSW 2034 target of 42 GWh of long-duration energy storage. The Stratford Pumped Hydro and Solar Project will be built on the former Stratford Coal Mine site, which closed in 2024 after exhausting its coal supply. The project is forecast to create new jobs and drive economic growth in the region. The New South Wales government has announced further bids for long-duration energy storage projects, with Tender Round 9 seeking 12 GWh of storage with a minimum objective of 2 GW and 16 GWh by 2030.
