Yindjibarndi Energy signs 30-year PPA with Rio Tinto for Jinbi Solar Project

Type: Ppa · Technology: Solar · Country: Australia · Capacity: 150 MW · Announced: 2026-05-11

Yindjibarndi Energy Corporation has signed a 30-year power purchase agreement (PPA) with Rio Tinto for the Jinbi Solar Project, a 150 MW solar facility located in Western Australia's Pilbara region. The project, which is expected to commence commercial operations in mid-2028, will supply 100% of its electricity to Rio Tinto, supporting the miner's decarbonization efforts. The Jinbi Solar Project is Yindjibarndi Energy's first project to reach financial close, and it forms part of a broader plan to develop over 3 GW of solar, wind, and battery storage in the Pilbara region. The project's development is a material step towards translating renewable energy developments into enduring outcomes for traditional owners. The PPA with Rio Tinto has enabled Yindjibarndi Energy to issue a notice to proceed to its engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contractor, DT Infrastructure. The deal demonstrates the potential for Indigenous-led renewable energy projects in Australia, with Yindjibarndi Energy exercising authority on its traditional lands and building an economic future that reflects its law, culture, and responsibilities.
