Allianz Global Investors (AllianzGI) acquired a 51% stake in German battery storage platform Green Energy Storage Initiative (GESI), marking the firm’s second large-scale energy storage investment in recent months. GESI develops, constructs, and operates high-performance, digitalized utility-scale battery storage systems designed to provide flexibility within energy systems supplied by intermittent renewable sources like wind and solar. The company is currently developing three large-scale battery storage projects in Germany, with an aggregate grid connection capacity of 2.6 GW, located at strategically critical transmission network nodes using existing grid infrastructure including former power plant sites. These projects, scheduled for commissioning by 2029, represent some of the largest battery storage developments in Germany. AllianzGI’s investment follows a March 2026 agreement with TotalEnergies to acquire a 50% stake in 11 BESS projects under construction in Germany, expanding Allianz’s exposure to the large-scale battery storage sector. The transaction reinforces Allianz’s role in scaling system-critical infrastructure to enhance energy system stability and resilience.
