Atlantic Canada Bulk Terminal adapted for offshore wind hub
The Atlantic Canada Bulk Terminal (ACBT) in Sydney, Nova Scotia, has been adapted to serve as a strategic hub for the offshore wind industry, including future developments like Nova Scotia Wind West. Sarens, a heavy lifting and engineered transport company, partnered with the port owner to reconfigure the terminal's quayside. This involved ensuring it could safely handle the loading and unloading of massive wind turbine blades and offshore foundation piles, some weighing over 1,900 tons and measuring 100 meters in length. Sarens conducted ground studies to guarantee stability for heavy machinery and mobilized a large-capacity crawler crane with a "Superlift" tray to manage the immense loads, proving the port's high-capacity Lift-on/Lift-off (LoLo) capabilities. The quay was also transformed into a Roll-on/Roll-off (RoRo) facility to facilitate efficient component movement using SPMTs from specialized heavy transport vessels.
