Atome PLC secures $665 million financing for 60,000 tpa green hydrogen-based fertilizer plant in Paraguay
Atome PLC reached Final Investment Decision (FID) on a $665 million green hydrogen-based fertilizer plant in Villeta, Paraguay, marking the first industrial-scale facility of its kind globally to achieve FID. The 60,000 tonne-per-year (tpa) low-carbon fertilizer plant will produce fertilizer using green hydrogen-based processes, with full production expected to commence by or before October 2029. The project funding includes $420 million in debt financing from international development finance institutions and $245 million in equity investment led by Hy24 through its Clean Hydrogen Infrastructure Fund, alongside IFC, KfW DEG, IFDK, Sudameris, and Atome PLC. The financing structure includes a $245 million equity investment led by Hy24, with additional support from IFC, KfW DEG, IFDK (backed by an EFSD+ guarantee under the EU Global Gateway strategy), and Sudameris, Paraguay’s second-largest financial institution. The project is not being developed through UK government grants or aid, positioning it as a fully commercial initiative in the green hydrogen fertilizer sector.
