BGFA funds solar mini-grid project in Dungu, DRC, with €3 million

The Beyond the Grid Fund for Africa (BGFA) has committed €3 million in financing to Les Soleils de la Garamba S.A.S.U for a solar mini-grid project in Dungu, Democratic Republic of Congo, announced on 2026-03-16. This capital injection will support the development of a 2.5 MW solar mini-grid, specifically designed to deliver reliable electricity to over 19,000 people in the region by 2029. The financing directly addresses critical infrastructure gaps, aiming to enhance local economic opportunities, improve healthcare services, and contribute to environmental conservation efforts within the Haut-Uélé province. This targeted investment aligns with BGFA's mandate to accelerate clean energy access in underserved rural and peri-urban areas across Sub-Saharan Africa. Les Soleils de la Garamba S.A.S.U operates as a special purpose vehicle (SPV), established solely for the development and operation of this 2.5 MW solar mini-grid project in Haut-Uélé, DRC, demonstrating a focused approach to project delivery. For the Helsinki-based BGFA, this €3 million commitment represents its fourth mini-grid project in the Democratic Republic of Congo, further solidifying its presence and strategy within the country. Established in 2019 with EUR 120 million under management, BGFA continues to deploy its multi-donor capital towards its core mission of expanding clean energy access across Sub-Saharan Africa, with this Dungu project contributing directly to that portfolio.
