Boskalis converts vessel Windpiper into subsea rock installation vessel for offshore wind projects
Boskalis finalized the conversion of the Windpiper vessel into the industry's largest subsea rock installation (SRI) vessel, with a rock-carrying capacity of 45,500 tonnes. The vessel, originally purchased in January 2025, underwent extensive modifications including the creation of two large rock holds and installation of an inclined fallpipe system for precise rock placement. Measuring 227 meters in length and 40 meters in width, the Windpiper features over 100 single-occupancy cabins and a total installed power exceeding 31,000 kW. The vessel arrived in Rotterdam, Netherlands, for final outfitting and commissioning before its first assignment in the Baltic Sea later in 2026. This conversion positions Boskalis as a leader in offshore wind infrastructure support, enabling high-precision rock installation critical for offshore wind farm development.
