ClassNK grants approval for high-corrosion-resistant wire cable for floating wind mooring developed by KOBELCO Wire
ClassNK issued Approval of Manufacturing Procedure (AMP) and Type Approval certificates to KOBELCO Wire for a high-corrosion-resistant semi-parallel wire cable (SPWC) designed for floating offshore wind turbine mooring systems. The newly approved cable features polyethylene-coated strands made from 7-millimeter-diameter galvanized steel wires, offering enhanced fatigue strength and corrosion resistance compared to conventional steel chains and synthetic fiber ropes. ClassNK verified compliance with its Guidelines for Floating Offshore Wind Turbines before granting certification, marking the first time the society has approved such a high-corrosion-resistant SPWC. The technology is positioned as a potential alternative for mooring lines in floating offshore wind structures, allowing flexibility in mooring configurations. KOBELCO Wire applied for the certification, triggering ClassNK's technical evaluation process.
