DOE Awards $19 Million to Advance Nuclear Fuel Recycling
The U.S. Department of Energy's Office of Nuclear Energy has awarded over $19 million to five U.S. companies to research and develop recycling technologies for used nuclear fuel. The projects aim to reduce the volume of used fuel stored across the country and maximize reliable power production. The companies will study various methods, including electrochemical processing and pyro-processing, to recycle used nuclear fuel. The awards support President Trump's nuclear energy agenda and will help to advance the development of recycling technologies that meet the nation's strict nonproliferation standards and national security goals. The projects will last up to three years and require a minimum 20 percent cost share from each award recipient.
