Drax acquires Flexitricity to enhance AI-driven battery energy storage system (BESS) operations
UK energy company Drax completed the acquisition of Flexitricity, a 20-year-old AI-based optimizer specializing in flexible energy assets. Flexitricity provides optimization and route-to-market services for over 900 MW of operational assets, primarily battery energy storage systems (BESS), gas peakers, renewables, and demand-side response. The deal enables Drax to integrate AI-driven trading capabilities for its growing BESS portfolio, which includes a 15-year tolling agreement with Zenobe signed earlier in 2026. Drax operates a 24/7 power trading desk in Yorkshire, England, and has decades of experience in Great Britain’s electricity market. The acquisition supports Drax’s plans to develop a gigawatt-scale pipeline of BESS opportunities, including physical assets and third-party project optimization through route-to-market structures.
