Elewit, Redeia, Tecnalia, and Reintel collaborate on 50 km quantum communications link for smart grid cybersecurity
Elewit, the technology platform of Redeia, partnered with the Basque technology center Tecnalia and Reintel, the telecommunications infrastructure provider, to successfully test a 50-kilometer quantum communications link over fiber optics connecting subestations in Itsaso (Gipuzkoa) and Vitoria (Álava). The project validates quantum key distribution (QKD) technology for securing smart grids against cyber threats, demonstrating stable operation in industrial environments with electromagnetic interference. The trial builds on a 2023 pilot that achieved a 1-kilometer quantum link, confirming scalability and reliability for real-world grid applications. The collaboration was supported by Basque government programs Elkartek and Azpitek, as well as Spain’s Quantum Communication Complementary Plan under the Next Generation EU recovery funds. This initiative positions Spain as a leader in quantum-secured critical infrastructure, addressing vulnerabilities in increasingly digitalized power networks.
