Enel Green Power Chile starts construction of Azabache BESS with 94 MW / 372 MWh battery storage system in Antofagasta
Enel Green Power Chile initiated construction on April 1, 2026, for the Azabache BESS battery storage system in Antofagasta, Chile, integrating 94 MW of capacity with 372 MWh of storage. The project will be co-located with the existing Azabache solar plant (60.09 MW) and Valle de los Vientos wind farm (90 MW), forming a hybrid renewable complex near Calama. The battery system will shift renewable energy production curves to deliver power during peak demand hours, enabling near-continuous generation by leveraging solar output midday to afternoon and wind contributions in subsequent hours. Located 10 kilometers from Calama, the Azabache solar plant alone produces over 184 GWh annually using 154,170 bifacial panels. Enel highlighted that the storage addition will enhance grid stability and renewable energy dispatchability in Chile's northern power system.
