Google extends long-term sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) supply agreement with Amex GBT and Shell via Avelia platform
Google extended its long-term collaboration with the Avelia sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) registry platform, initially joined in 2023, to source SAF environmental attribute information through a book-and-claim model. The Avelia program, launched in 2022 by Shell and Accenture with support from the Energy Web Foundation (EWF), aggregates global demand for SAF from Amex GBT’s 19,000 global customers, enabling business travelers to pay for SAF and claim environmental benefits regardless of fuel availability at departure airports. To date, Avelia has onboarded 66 corporations and airlines, abating over 590,000 tonnes of CO2e through SAF adoption. The platform expanded in 2025 to support a multi-supplier model, allowing users to access SAF from multiple providers within Avelia, and is exploring a 'Bring Your Own SAF' (BYOS) model to integrate offline-tracked SAF into the digital registry. Google’s renewed commitment provides critical financial signals to the SAF ecosystem, supporting broader decarbonization efforts in the hard-to-abate aviation sector.
