Ireland signs memorandums of understanding with Spain and the UK to expand energy interconnection and cooperation

Partnership Transmission announced Ireland Apr 23, 2026

Ireland’s Minister for Climate, Energy and the Environment Darragh O’Brien signed two memorandums of understanding at WindEurope 2026 in Madrid—one with Spain and another with the UK. The agreement with Spain establishes a framework to explore the development of a future electricity interconnector between the two countries, including cooperation between transmission system operators and joint technical and economic analysis of the potential project. The second memorandum with the UK extends the existing Ireland-UK energy transition agreement, which was set to expire in June 2026, to continue cooperation on offshore renewable energy, electricity markets, and security of supply. Both agreements align with Ireland’s upcoming Presidency of the Council of the European Union in the second half of 2026. The memorandums underscore Ireland’s commitment to collaborating with European partners to build a secure, sustainable, and resilient energy future.
