Italian Ministry of Defense and GSE Sign Agreement for Energy Autonomy Through Renewables

Partnership Solar announced IT Apr 1, 2026

Difesa Servizi, the in-house company of the Italian Ministry of Defense, and Gestore dei Servizi Energetici (GSE) have signed a three-year memorandum of understanding to promote energy transition within the defense sector. The agreement focuses on energy efficiency, renewable sources, storage, and self-consumption, aiming for full energy autonomy for the defense sector within 24 months. Difesa Servizi has already installed 27 solar plants covering one million square meters of land and 500,000 square meters of roofs on barracks and naval arsenals, producing over 150 GWh annually. New plants from the "Energia 5.0" tender, awarded in June 2025, will add an estimated 690 GWh per year, bringing the total target production to 840 GWh annually. The protocol also includes co-financing models, storage projects, biofuel utilization, sustainable mobility, and the development of EV charging infrastructure.
