Johnson Matthey (JM) agreed to supply methanol technology for Guangdong Liquid Sunshine’s first commercial-scale biomethanol plant in Tiandong County, Guangxi Province, China. The project, with an initial annual production capacity of 75,000 tonnes of biomethanol, will convert gasified biomass waste into fuel using JM’s methanol synthesis loop and high-performance catalyst. Construction is expected to begin in 2026, with completion anticipated in the coming years as part of China’s Five-Year Plan (2026–2030) to accelerate green fuel production. A potential second phase would integrate electrolytic hydrogen with captured CO₂ to produce e-methanol, further expanding low-carbon methanol output without additional biomass feedstock. The collaboration includes a memorandum of understanding to explore future decarbonization projects, leveraging JM’s methanol expertise and ECEC’s green hydrogen and process integration capabilities.
