Landatu Solar tests modular floating solar energy system at Port of Bilbao
Landatu Solar has installed a pilot floating solar energy system in the waters of the Port of Bilbao to assess its performance in a marine environment. The 12x12 metre pilot, part of the Seamod initiative, will test the technology's structural performance against waves, wind, corrosion, and anchoring systems. The project is supported by the Basque Government’s Hazitek 2024 programme and co-financed by the Basque Government Department of Economic Development, Sustainability and the Environment and the European Union through the European Regional Development Fund.

The pilot system is 12x12 metres and will test structural performance against waves, wind, corrosion, and anchoring systems. The system uses a stretched membrane and mesh structure with an outer frame providing buoyancy and rigidity. The design is intended to adapt to dynamic wave loads while enabling the use of simple and transportable components. Seamod is designed as a scalable system that could also be integrated with other marine renewable technologies such as offshore wind. The project aims to help expand renewable energy deployment at sea while reducing pressure on agricultural and developable land. The project is co-financed by the Basque Government Department of Economic Development, Sustainability and the Environment and the European Union through the European Regional Development Fund. The project is supported by the Basque Government’s Hazitek 2024 programme.
