Lilac Solutions and PT Geo Dipa Energi to pilot lithium recovery technology from geothermal brine in Indonesia
California-based Lilac Solutions, Inc. partnered with Indonesia’s state-owned geothermal developer PT Geo Dipa Energi (GDE) to pilot its ion exchange direct lithium recovery technology at GDE’s Dieng geothermal field in Central Java. The project marks Indonesia’s first facility to extract lithium from geothermal brine, leveraging existing geothermal operations to produce high-grade lithium carbonate. USTDA’s funding will enable Lilac to deploy its technology at the Dieng site, while also connecting GDE with potential U.S. buyers of the lithium carbonate output. The pilot aims to demonstrate the scalability of Lilac’s method, attracting financing for future expansion and unlocking Indonesia’s geothermal lithium potential across the Indo-Pacific region. Strategic collaboration between Indonesia and the U.S. will support Indonesia’s battery industry and domestic lithium-based applications, creating economic benefits for local communities while maintaining environmental stewardship.
