Meta signs 1GW space solar energy deal with Overview Energy for commercial power delivery by 2030

Capacity

Meta signed a first-of-a-kind partnership with space solar firm Overview Energy to secure early access to up to 1GW of energy from Overview's space solar energy system. The agreement grants Meta access to power generated by collecting solar energy in space, which is then beamed down to existing solar facilities on the ground for conversion into electricity. Commercial power delivery is slated for 2030, following an initial orbital demonstration expected to commence in 2028. Overview Energy claims the technology maximizes asset utilization by producing power around the clock, with the beam described as invisible, less intense than sunlight, and passively safe for humans, animals, and aircraft. The collaboration aligns with Meta's AI ambitions and infrastructure goals, leveraging cutting-edge technology to strengthen America's energy leadership.
