Meta signs partnership agreement with Overview Energy to supply space-based solar power to data centers
Meta signed a groundbreaking partnership with Overview Energy to secure up to 1 GW of space-based solar power for its data centers, bypassing terrestrial grid limitations. The agreement grants Meta early access to Overview Energy’s orbital solar energy system, which captures continuous solar energy in geosynchronous orbit and transmits it to existing ground-based solar facilities as low-intensity infrared light. A demonstration is planned for 2028, with commercial energy supply expected to begin in 2030. The system aims to increase solar facility output by up to 30% by eliminating atmospheric attenuation and operating outside the day-night cycle. Overview Energy’s advisory board includes former NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine and former NASA Administrator Mike Griffin, reflecting the project’s technical and strategic significance.
