Microsoft signs 1 million ton carbon removal deal with U.S. biochar company Liferaft
Microsoft has signed a ten-year offtake agreement with U.S.-based biochar company Liferaft to purchase one million carbon removal units (CRUs). These CRUs will be generated through biochar projects located in the U.S. Midwest, specifically in Iowa and Illinois. Liferaft will process agricultural and municipal biomass using pyrolysis to create biochar compost mixes for agricultural applications, ensuring long-term carbon storage through robust monitoring, reporting, and verification (MRV) systems. This deal, facilitated by carbon removal marketplace Supercritical, supports Microsoft's commitment to becoming carbon negative by 2030 and aims to create quality jobs in rural American communities.
