Nexans and Statnett complete 420 kV subsea cable project across Fensfjord in Norway
Nexans and Statnett completed the 420 kV subsea cable project across the Fensfjord in western Norway, doubling transmission capacity between Haugsværvær and Lindås. The two high-voltage HVAC subsea cables span approximately 7.8 km, linking the Mongstad area to Iledalsvågen and reinforcing Norway’s high-voltage grid amid rising energy demand. The project, awarded to Nexans in 2022, required engineering, manufacturing, and installation of cables capable of operating at a world-record depth of 530 meters below sea level. Installation involved anchoring solutions for steep seabed terrain with slopes up to 55 degrees and the use of 180 concrete mattresses to stabilize the seabed. Marine operations were executed by the cable-laying vessel Nexans Skagerrak, with support from specialized vessels and onshore teams, achieving full completion in 2026 after energization and final certification.
