Northern Territory government awards Pacific Energy contract to deliver two large-scale battery energy storage systems in Alice Springs and Katherine
The Northern Territory government, through its utility Territory Generation, awarded Pacific Energy a contract to install two large-scale battery energy storage systems (BESS) totaling 33.5 MW / 81 MWh across the Alice Springs and Darwin–Katherine power grids. The project includes a 12 MW, four-hour battery at Owen Springs Power Station near Alice Springs valued at $46.5 million and a 21.5 MW, one-hour system at Katherine Power Station worth $35.6 million, with Pacific Energy responsible for design, manufacturing, supply, installation, integration, and a 10-year service support agreement. Chinese manufacturer Narada Power will supply the battery units while Swedish-Swiss multinational ABB provides inverter systems, with civil works for the Owen Springs battery starting in the coming months and design works for the Katherine battery underway. The batteries are planned to come online progressively from 2028, enhancing system stability, enabling more solar generation, and providing essential frequency and voltage control services. The initiative is part of Territory Generation’s broader BESS program, which has already delivered a 35 MW / 35 MWh Darwin–Katherine BESS, aiming to strengthen the Northern Territory’s energy infrastructure and support economic growth by improving energy security and attracting new industries.
