RWE installs first offshore wind turbine with green steel tower and recyclable blades at Thor project
RWE installed the first offshore wind turbine at its 1,080MW Thor project in Denmark featuring a steel tower manufactured with lower-carbon steel by Salzgitter and recyclable rotor blades from Siemens Gamesa. The turbine marks a world-first deployment combining green steel tower technology with recyclable blades, positioning Thor as a flagship project for sustainable offshore wind development. Siemens Gamesa will equip up to 40 of the project’s 72 SG 15-236 DD turbines with its recyclable blades, while Salzgitter’s green steel process reduces the tower’s carbon footprint through scrap steel use and renewable energy-powered manufacturing. RWE aims to bring Thor into commercial operations in early 2027, making it Denmark’s largest offshore wind farm upon completion. The project underscores RWE’s commitment to circular economy principles in wind energy, following the recyclable blade deployment at its Kaskasi project in the German North Sea.
