Spark Renewables secures NSW planning approval for 800 MW Dinawan Solar Farm and 356 MW/1,574 MWh battery project
Spark Renewables, a subsidiary of Malaysian utility giant Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB), secured final state planning approval from the New South Wales (NSW) Independent Planning Commission (IPC) for the 800 MW Dinawan Solar Farm and a 356 MW/1,574 MWh battery energy storage system near Coleambally in southwest NSW. The hybrid project, located within the South West Renewable Energy Zone (REZ), will deliver large-scale dispatchable renewable power to Australia’s grid, improving grid stability and energy security while reducing reliance on fossil fuel-based generation. Valued at AUD 1.35 billion ($930 million), the project was recommended for approval by the NSW Department of Planning, Housing and Infrastructure in December 2025 but referred to the IPC after over 50 public objections were raised during assessment. The IPC approved the project after addressing concerns related to cumulative impacts, traffic, noise, contamination, social impacts, emergency planning, local infrastructure, and insurance requirements. Once operational, the solar farm and battery will generate enough renewable energy to power approximately 142,000 homes and create around 400 full-time jobs during construction.
