TECNALIA and Surion Wind Systems are targeting the modernization of existing onshore wind farms, leveraging offshore technology and repowering strategies across Europe and globally. The collaboration, announced on 2026-03-09, focuses on extending the operational lifespan and enhancing the efficiency of current assets. TECNALIA, a Derio, Spain-based research and technology center with 1,000 experts, contributes its engineering expertise to these projects. Surion Wind Systems, a Madrid-based developer, brings innovative designs to the partnership, aiming to unlock additional value from mature onshore sites. This partnership, with an undisclosed value, offers a capital-efficient pathway to increasing renewable energy generation without developing entirely new greenfield projects. Surion Wind Systems, founded in 2018, has a track record of over 2 GW in utility-scale solar PV and onshore wind projects, primarily focusing on new development. This collaboration expands Surion's portfolio strategy into asset optimization and repowering, moving beyond its traditional build-and-operate model. For TECNALIA, a leading European research and technology center, the deal provides a commercial pathway for its energy transition innovations, applying its 1,000 experts' knowledge directly to operational assets.
