TenneT and National Grid Ventures sign Joint Development Agreement for LionLink offshore wind interconnector
Transmission system operators TenneT and National Grid Ventures formalized a Joint Development Agreement to advance the LionLink project, a 2 GW hybrid interconnector linking the UK and Netherlands via a future offshore wind farm in the Dutch North Sea. The agreement outlines joint development toward a final investment decision, including procurement, governance, and planning frameworks, while aiming to increase transparency on project costs ahead of construction. LionLink will connect the two countries through a grid link to the planned Nederwiek 3 offshore wind farm, maximizing offshore wind utilization and providing additional system flexibility. The project, launched in April 2023, represents a first-of-its-kind electricity link designed to integrate cross-border interconnection with offshore wind generation. Expected to be commissioned in the early 2030s, LionLink will supply up to 2.5 million households with clean energy.
