Terna proposes 16 GWh of storage capacity for 2029 Macse auction, with Arera's approval
Arera has given its favorable opinion to Terna's proposal for the 2029 Macse auction, which aims to procure 16 GWh of storage capacity. Arera emphasized a prudent approach to auction contingents, considering market dynamics and potential storage capacity entering operation or already secured via the Capacity Market. The proposed 16 GWh is allocated across different Italian regions, with specific minimum and maximum requirements for the South, Calabria, Sicily, and Sardinia, while the North and Central North areas have no minimum requirement. Terna estimates an expected storage capacity need of 42 GWh by 2030, with 10 GWh already secured for the 2028 Macse auction, leading to an additional 32 GWh requirement. Terna suggests procuring 50% of this additional need (16 GWh) in 2029, deferring precise future needs to further evaluations considering natural gas and storage development costs.
