TerraPower Isotopes, a nuclear medicine company backed by Bill Gates, announced plans to build a $450 million manufacturing facility in South Philadelphia's Bellwether District. The 250,000-square-foot plant will produce rare radioactive isotopes (actinium-225) used for targeted alpha therapy in cancer treatment. The state is investing $10 million in the project, which is expected to create 225 full-time jobs over three years. Philadelphia was selected over 350 other potential sites due to its proximity to life science industries.
