Trenitalia awards €260m contract to Hitachi Rail for nine new-generation Frecciarossa trains
Trenitalia has signed a €260 million contract with Hitachi Rail for the supply of nine new-generation Frecciarossa trains, designed for speeds of 360km/h. This agreement builds on a previous deal from 2023 for 36 trains and an additional 10 sets, forming part of Italian State Railways’ (FS) strategic plan for fleet expansion. The new multi-system trains will operate in Italy and across seven European railway networks, featuring advanced traction systems for improved efficiency and Hitachi Rail's HMAX digital asset management system. Trenitalia aims to have 57 new Frecciarossa high-speed trains in service by 2029, with plans to increase the total to 74 by 2031. The trains are designed with a 97.1% recyclability rate and a 98.2% material recovery rate to minimize environmental impact at the end of their life.
