Ultium Cells, a joint venture between General Motors and LG Energy Solution, announced a $70 million investment to retrofit its manufacturing plant in Spring Hill, Tennessee. This capital injection will enable the facility to shift a portion of its battery cell production from electric vehicles to LFP cells specifically designed for stationary energy storage systems. The retrofit aims to commence the manufacturing of these new LFP cells for stationary batteries at the Spring Hill plant. This strategic move allows Ultium Cells to expand its product offerings into the rapidly growing stationary storage market, leveraging its existing manufacturing capabilities in Tennessee. The investment underscores the increasing demand for battery solutions beyond electric vehicles, supporting grid stability and renewable energy integration.

KEY DETAILS

The Spring Hill facility will produce LFP cells for both stationary energy storage systems and electric vehicles in parallel. The retrofit marks Ultium Cells’ first major retooling of the Spring Hill process equipment. The facility previously produced NMCA cells (nickel-cobalt-manganese-aluminium), shifting to LFP (lithium iron phosphate) as of July 2025. LG Energy Solution plans to increase its global production capacity for energy storage systems to over 60 GWh in 2026, with more than 80% in North America. The Spring Hill plant complements LG Energy Solution’s North American ESS network, which includes facilities in Holland, Michigan; Windsor, Ontario; and Lansing, Michigan. The Lansing plant will supply battery cells to Tesla for its 'Megapack 3' systems under a $4.3 billion deal starting next year.
