Van Oord signs contract for Groene Rivier Well area development flood protection and nature project
Van Oord secured a final contract award from the Limburg Water Board to implement the Groene Rivier Well area development project in northern Limburg, Netherlands. The €50 million initiative will enhance flood protection while creating 200 hectares of new nature areas and future-proof agricultural spaces along the Meuse River. Scheduled for completion by 2029, the project includes the construction of 15 km of flood defenses and restoration of 100 hectares of riverine ecosystems. The Limburg Water Board selected Van Oord following a competitive tender process launched in 2024, with construction expected to begin in Q3 2026. This project aligns with the Netherlands' Room for the River program, which aims to balance flood risk management with ecological restoration.
