Vattenfall's Aberdeen offshore wind farm study finds seabirds avoid turbines
A new study at Vattenfall's Aberdeen offshore wind farm, built in 2018, found no confirmed bird collisions during 19 months of monitoring, suggesting seabirds largely avoid turbine blades. The research, conducted in collaboration with biodiversity technology company Spoor, analyzed video footage from one turbine between June 2023 and December 2024. The findings indicate that the wind farm is affecting seabirds far less than predicted in environmental assessments, supporting the low-risk operation of modern offshore wind farms for wildlife.
