Zuse Institute Berlin and Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin partner to establish AI and HPC data center in Berlin
The Zuse Institute Berlin (ZIB) and the Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin (HZB) signed an agreement on March 27, 2026, to establish an AI and HPC data center in the Adlershof area of Berlin, Germany. This multi-stage project will initially consolidate ZIB's infrastructure in Berlin-Dahlem and establish a new site with expanded hardware at HZB's Berlin-Adlershof location. The data center aims to provide digital power infrastructure for modern cutting-edge research, particularly in materials, health, and climate research, strengthening Berlin's technological independence. This collaboration will also enhance the IT infrastructure at HZB's BESSY II light source and prepare for the planned successor, BESSY III. The project represents a strategic investment in Berlin's scientific excellence, supporting data-intensive research with powerful, flexible, and secure operating models.
